Weingut Hirschhof

hirschhof-weinberg.jpg

The vineyards of the Hirschhof, which is steeped in tradition, are immediately adjacent to the village of Westhofen.

A revolution has taken place in the hills of Rheinhessen. Full of confidence and with a spirit of innovation, the young generation is proving that equally interesting wines can ripen on clayey, warm, weathered chalk soils or loamy loess, as on the red argillaceous shale slopes down by the Rhine.

Vineyard peaches complement the vines

The proud Hirschhof in the idyllic Westhofen region has also seen a lot of change, above all since the young Tobias Zimmer has been assisting his father. The vineyard is one of the pioneers in the field of controlled organic cultivation in Germany. It was 1991 when the family started ecological cultivation, and they now have appropriately healthy vigorous vines.

Winemaker Tobias Zimmer has a preference for red wines.

Increasing importance is now being placed on broad biodiversity. Vineyard peach trees are now being added to the vines. Tobias Zimmer is also having success with his own mixture of winter seeds sewn between the vines.

Balancing act with many varieties

It is interesting that Riesling is just as successful as Grauburgunder or Weissburgunder on the light, south-facing slopes in Rheinhessen. But even Silvaner, Gewürztraminer or Sauvignon Blanc deliver astonishing results. Tobias Zimmer is devoted with particular enthusiasm to red wine, above all the best possible composition of the red cuvées.

Old, but with a very good interior climate: the wine cellar of the Hirschhof.

The origins of the Hirschhof go back as far as 1466. One of the family’s ancestors is said to have protected his lord from an attacking stag and in thanks, he was given the seigneury, the coat of arms and the title.
